What Amazonbot does
Amazon says Amazonbot is “used to improve our products and services” and “may be used to train Amazon AI models.”
Amazon runs two other agents with narrower jobs: Amzn-SearchBot for search experiences such as Alexa, and Amzn-User for live lookups when a user asks Alexa something. Amazon says neither crawls for generative AI training.
Should you allow it?
A training choice. If you block it, name only Amazonbot so Amazon’s search and live-lookup agents can still reach you.
What blocking it changes: Amazonbot should stop collecting your pages, including for AI training. To stay in Alexa answers, leave Amzn-SearchBot and Amzn-User allowed.
Allow or block Amazonbot in robots.txt
Amazon says it follows robots.txt, but may use a cached copy up to 30 days old, and ignores Crawl-delay. A change can take up to a month to apply.
To allow it
User-agent: Amazonbot Allow: /
To block it
User-agent: Amazonbot Disallow: /
robots.txt lets every bot in by default, so you only need the allow lines if another rule in your file would otherwise block it. Our robots.txt guide explains how rules for different bots combine.
How it appears in your server logs
Amazon publishes this as the bot’s user-agent string, the label it sends with every visit:
Mozilla/5.0 AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko; compatible; Amazonbot/0.1) Chrome/W.X.Y.Z Safari/537.36
How to check a visit is really Amazonbot
Amazon publishes separate IP lists for Amazonbot, Amzn-SearchBot and Amzn-User.
Our guide to server log checks shows where to find these visits on common hosting setups.
